These works on paper represent a ‘break’ from my paintings, which are very dense and layered. The subject is the same as in my paintings – some small aspect of a natural object which I ‘zoom into’. I like to utilize the white of the paper in these drawings and let the strokes of pastel or oil stick form an image. The color is important to me – I use dull colors contrasted with notes of pure color.
Stephanie DeManuelle grew up and was educated in Louisiana and moved to New York after college. She is presently the Chair of the Fine Arts Department at FIT-she spends time in the Adirondack Mountains, which is a source of inspiration for her work.
