"I create sculptures out of found materials and experiment with different mediums to create an outcome that means something to me and can serve as a visual representation of my views of the world. My work deals with our relationship to form and the space around it, it is far more than just the physical thing itself. It is the way we perceive it, the way we interact with it, and the way it makes us feel. While I am working with these materials I am reacting to their limitations, the form the object already has and the space it takes up. I have to respect that and learn to adapt and still remain true to my initial agreement for that project that I had made with myself prior to going into it."
Amanda Heidel grew up in Red Bank, NJ. As a child and young adult, she explored creativity in forms of writing, performing arts, and music. Heidel attended Lynn University in Florida in 2005 to study journalism soon switching to advertising and design. After graduating in 2009, Amanda moved to New York City to work at Viacom Media Networks in Nickelodeon’s Ad Sales department. Quickly realizing she wasn’t going to be able to be as creative as she would like to be there, she enrolled in continuing education classes at Parsons The New School for Design to study graphic design. Around the same time she started to take mixed media art classes at The Art Studio NY and began experimenting with creating sculptures out of found objects.
Amanda recently traveled to India for a 6 week artist in residence program where she studied miniature painting. Heidel currently lives in Ocean Grove, NJ. When she isn’t creating in the studio, you can find her quietly meditating to the sound of the ocean waves on the beach, doing yoga, or curating shows in unexpected places in New York City.
