There are times in my travels when the waves are too big or the water too cold—and those are the times I reach for my camera to capture moments of surf. The proud spray of water glistening in the sun when a surfer makes a quick turn. The clean, clear, curve of blue as the wave lines up and a surfer glides across the face smiling at the open path ahead. And of course, the hilarious moments when balance is lost, Mother Nature surprises, or people just get tired… The wipeouts!
There are stories in the waves, with each surfer, how they interact with one another, with what they seek, and what they find. Some of these stories are told in my work. I am always surprised by how much an image is transformed when it is transferred to wood—the end result is quite unpredictable. But the irregularities often add texture and beauty. The surfer’s story is reinforced through color selection, painted backgrounds and 3D collage.
